Here are some sites to get real video. Most of these can support quality up to HDTV.

• http://www.netflix.com
  Netflix is not free - but you can view an unlimited amount of their content online even for the lowest subscription level.

You can also try the source of the content such as the network's site for popular TV shows. Much PBS content is posted as soon as it is produced so you don't even have to wait for the schedule.
