OK ... I'll consider using Skype.

Can anyone guide me through the starting process? Their website seems heavy on promotion and very light on documentation.

I'm particularly interested in security concerns. I've heard that by default you're installed as a relay node and there is some configuration to disable that. I'll also want to know how to block my ID from public view so only invited friends can access me. I also noticed that when I closed the window it remained in my system tray. Is there a hard shutdown without having to reboot after a call?

I have not yet read the EULA and Privacy Statement required to install it. I also have not yet registered for first use. If my answers are self-evident when I do that, you don't need to hold my hand that much.
